PC Community Main Meeting
7:30 - 10 pm February 3, 2017
Calvary Baptist Church 28924 Ruus Road, Hayward California
President Chuck Horner called the meeting to order at 7:29 pm. Get at least one $5 raffle ticket for this month’s raffle prize, a 32 GB Samsung USB 3 drive.
Jan Fagerholm reported on the Spectacular Linux SIG, which meets the last Saturday of each month. He demonstrated how his Linux-based Garmin Linux watch can find his phone. The watch can also use it for navigating, though if you want a graphical map Google Maps is suggested. The screen on a watch is just too small. The next Linux SIG will look at the Endless operating system. Chuck noted that Linux is the best cure for a virus.
Next month, Chuck and Bayle will demonstrate some features of WordPerfect.
Member Bayle Emlein attended CES in Las Vegas at the beginning of January. She showed a retrospective of some of the press conferences, official show, and private company and press events.
Things keep changing. Chuck noted that Facebook is starting to stream video. Tesla is promoting solar shingles; they are trying to change their image to “an energy company.” They also have power walls according to member Sally Holt. Jan noted that smartphones use a special kind of iridium that comes only from China, complicating the international market.
Chuck warned: If you get a unidentified (robo) call, do not respond. They can use your response of “Yes” in answering the call to create a voiceprint create charges to your phone bill.
