Sally Holt volunteered to tally ballots in the election for 2017 Board of Directors. Lola Hunter was nominated to the slate and she accepted. Members present voted. The 2017 PCC Board of Directors are:
- Paul Cooper
- Michael Wong
- George Kornbluth
- Bayle Emlein
- Lola Hunter
The Board will convene to appoint the 2017 Executive Committee to run the day-to-day activities of PCC.
Michael had a computer story. He had gone to someone’s house to work on a computer. The computer wouldn’t start. After trying several things and cleaning it out, he still couldn’t get it going so he took it home to work on. He cleaned out some files and it’s running fine. He can’t figure out why it’s working, but it is. Others present reported cleaning desktops, especially those that sit on the floor. Paul reported having had a laptop with removable fans to make cleaning easier.
Sally reported a problem with internet and phone, for the third time. AT&T send two separate workers who said the problem was not at her house. She is using a Macbook. This time the problem started right after the rain. Paul suggested using her cell phone to set up a hotspot to get her laptop onto the internet.
Several people reported having their data plans increased by their provider at no additional cost. The conjecture was that this is to keep them as a customer.
Yorkman Lowe said that he doesn’t get voicemail messages promptly. Sometimes the phone doesn’t ring, but sends the call directly to voicemail. His carrier, Sprint, told him he needs a new phone. An experiment in calling Yorkman could not reproduce the problem.
George and Paul demonstrated using a cellphone to set up a hotspot and access the internet. Paul suggests using WiFi rather than Bluetooth.
What about USB 3 and USB 3.1. What does the 3.1 add? A whole lot of speed. If a USB port has a blue piece (instead of black), it’s probably USB 3.
Yorkman reported an experience during which his tablet started acting strange and he couldn’t turn it off. After a few minutes the problem solved itself. That happened one more time. A software update or an internal management were proposed as possible causes.
George demonstrated a USB connector for an iPhone.
