November 2015

PC Community Main Meeting
7:30 - 10 pm November 6, 2015
Calvary Baptist Church 28924 Ruus Road, Hayward California

The meeting was called to order at 7:49 pm by President Chuck Horner. Get your raffle tickets and door prize tickets. Also, pick up a 3” x 5” card to write questions for discussion/answers at the end of the Meeting. Get at least one $5 raffle ticket for this month's raffle prize, an ADATA 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive.

Chuck continued with nominations for the Board of Directors election, to take place on December 4, 2015. Currently on the roster:

  • Lola Hunter
  • Jan Fagerholm
  • Bayle Emlein
  • Chuck Horner
  • Don Odle
  • Paul Cooper

Presentation: Member Andrew Tews continued with Windows 10 tips. First suggestion is to wait until after the November 17 update to upgrade from Windows 7.

The new version of CCleaner can uninstall programs without a trip to the registry. Running the registry cleaner after will remove all the left-overs.

Don Odle suggested Advanced System Care to remove unwanted programs and clean up after them.

Another tip from Andrew: accept recommended updates but avoid those that are optional. The Windows Secrets website has useful tips and even Windows system information. ASKVG.com also has a lot of good tips.

The discussion took a detour to discuss USB versions and speed. Both the port and the USB drive need to be USB 3 to take full advantage of USB 3 properties.

After the break, Andrew showed a collection of favorite humor. You had to be here or beg him to email you a copy.

Lola Hunter has a new bank of Panasonic telephones that announce the name of a caller. Phones101 offers deals online.

Yorkman Lowe had a question about internet access with his tablet. The advice is to avoid WiFi in public places, but to be careful not to exceed one's monthly data plan. He also had a question about the comparison of tablets and laptops. The consensus was, it depends on the intended usage. For note-taking in the field, adding a bluetooth keyboard to your cell phone might be the best way to go. Tablets tend to be too heavy.
