Presentation: Members shared about their first computers. Chuck Horner had an 8088. Yorkman Lowe had an Apple IIc. Sally Holt didn't buy a computer until 2004. Andrew Tews' was a Z89. George Kornbluth's was an IMB luggable. Chuck described a FlexoWriter. Mimi Tse's first computer was an IBM with 5.25” but she doesn't remember the model number. Bill Huston's was a PET with an 8” floppy drive. Alex K had an AT&T 5200 that weighed a ton and had a 5.25” drive. Michael Wong went in with a group of guys at work and got a 286 kit; he couldn't figure out why he'd want to spend an extra $50 for 40 more Meg of memory: nobody would ever fill up that much memory! Lola Hunter cannot remember what her first computer was. Bayle Emlein started with a TRS-80 Model 3.
The first computer Chuck had contact with was the size of a refrigerator and refrigerated. He learned a lot of avionics and electronics in the military, where he also had the opportunity to practice prayer.
What was your starter software? Several people started with an early version of WordPerfect. Chuck became a macro maniac. Scripsit was an early word processor. Andrew particularly liked Multiplan as a database because it sorted accurately.
A tip from Chuck: name files with Year Month Date in that format for sorting.
Andrew has seen an Intel USB computer for $159. It's called an Intel Compute Stick.
Bayle has problem: she needs send photo albums to recipients who do not want to add apps to view them. Picasa used to do this, but doesn't any more. Bill Huston suggested Shutterfly.
Lola wonders what people would recommend for a laptop. Chuck uses his phone and a bluetooth keyboard for many mobile functions. He uses a Toshiba Portege, which has HDMI, USB, video, and internet ports.
Chuck has a problem with his Android phone. His Contacts are creating duplicates.
Sally shared an email from Bud Gallagher. Bud has had surgery relating to his diabetes, but seems to be on the mend.
Bill Huston asked how to learn how to use Android. It was suggested he try You Tube. He has been getting emails from someone using his address and doesn't know how to block it without blocking something he sends himself.
If you get a notification to update software, do NOT click on it. Go to the originator of the software and download from the original site.
Don't buy cheap cables. It may not protect your equipment from electronic surges.
Yorkman has a contact involved with a class action suit against telemarketers. If you're interested, contact Mallison & Martinez, Attorneys 510-832-9999. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Andrew Tews has a computer that he updated from Windows 7 to 10. When he exits Internet Explorer, it leaves temporary internet files behind. Ccleaner reports that the files are still there after he has deleted them from through Windows 10.
