Cars and phones can now be hacked. Andrew Tews reported about a company selling hacking software—that was hacked. The take-home message is: back up often, don't trust the cloud.
Presentation: More about Windows 10, presented by member Paul Cooper. He pointed out the new splash screen with the internet connection indicated. Microsoft strongly urges you to use your email as your log-in so that you are always logged into your Microsoft email. When you install, you can go to Custom Installation and turn off some exposure, but since everyone is connected and using social media there is not much to hide anyway.
The new start-up screen looks a lot like Windows 7, with tiles and Windows 8 apps available from the Start button in the lower left corner. Tiles can be expanded to a third or half the screen or and restored down. The Alt+F4 key combination still works to close a program or to shut down the entire computer. A right mouse click on the Windows Start button opens a preselected list of utilities and programs. But no more charms.
Windows Defender comes with the operating system and seems to be sufficient. The backup routine has improved also and should be used every few months, at a minimum. If you're getting a solid state drive, it's not worth getting anything smaller than 256 GB.
Sally Holt brought in an external hard drive that she had a problem with. Paul's computer could not reformat it in Windows 10, implying a physical problem with the drive.
After the break, member Andrew Tews continued with Windows 10. His first suggestion was to turn off automatic reporting back to Microsoft.
Note, “Edge” has replaced Internet Explorer. The Windows Key+ G opens a screen recording utility. From many sources, Andrew has collected many files of keyboard shortcuts. Disk Clean Up will remove some, but not all, hidden files that are left from installation. These do not hurt, but take up up space.
