Special Interest Groups

SIGs (Special Interest Groups) are smaller groups that meet to learn about specific topics in more depth. SIGs change from time to time as member interests change so keep checking back for new information.

Special Interest Group meetings are held on different days throughout the month at members' homes, offices and at the Clubhouse, a meeting place at the Hayward Adult School. The Clubhouse is open most Saturdays and Wednesday evenings.

Hardware

The Hardware SIG meets on the Saturday following the main meeting at 8:00 p.m. in Hayward. Telephone the SIG leader, Del Parton or Tom Smith at (510) 887-4038 for directions and more details. Bring your hardware for diagnosis, repair or upgrade along with the manuals and any software that came with it (very important, our people are good, but they're not magicians). Bring tools if you've got them. If not, there is always an assortment available for your use.

Del Parton, delpa@pacbell.net,  (510) 276-4292

Linux

The wonderful world of Linux allows you to run a variety of window managers and use the same software (translation: Windows with options you never dreamed of.). If this sounds a little confusing, just show up and see the different ways you can run the same programs with different GUIs on Linux. The Linux SIG began in February, 1999 and meets on the last Saturday of the month. Please check the club calendar to verify the date of meeting.

Jan Fagerholm, pcc4me@netscape.net (510) 652-1726. Also, obtain directions at (510) 887-4038.

Start a New SIG

Do you want to start a SIG or gather with others to start a SIG? PCC will help you do it and you can use the Clubhouse to meet in if you need a meeting place. New ideas for SIGs include Quicken or QuickBooks, or Financial Software. You could become famous! Contact the VP SIGs or any PCC Officer at the main meeting or any other time that's convenient for you.

Special Interest Group Guidelines

Managing a SIG

The PCC Leadership has established these guidelines for managing a PCC Special Interest Group (SIG). These suggestions will lead to successful SIG meetings and increased attendance.

    1. The Executive Committee of PCC has the authority to approve the formation of a SIG.
    2. The SIG Leader will supply the Executive Committee all pertinent information about a new SIG in person.
    3. The SIG Leader will arrange for a meeting location (PCC may provide use of the Clubhouse)
    4. The SIG Leader will communicate SIG meeting dates, times and places in a timely fashion so that information can be communicated to the membership.
    5. The Executive Committee has authority to disband a SIG.
    6. The SIG should not conflict in topic or time with another SIG. If conflicts are unavoidable, the SIG Coordinator will decide how to proceed in a manner that's in the best interest of PCC. Advance notice by SIG Leaders is required so that there will be time to make decisions and communicate changes to the membership.
    7. Some reimbursement for refreshments may be allowed at the discretion of the SIG coordinator. PCC expense reimbursement policies shall apply.
    8. The SIG Leader is encouraged to query membership with occasional surveys at the main meetings.
    9. The SIG Leader is encouraged to create a web page that covers SIG activity that is updated in a timely fashion
    10. The SIG Leader is encouraged to provide a SIG report for next month for the Newsletter
    11. The SIG Leader is encouraged to supply articles, in general, to the newsletter
    12. The SIG Leader is encouraged to supply a sign-in sheet SIG attendance to the SIG Coordinator
    13. The SIG Leader is encouraged to have a backup SIG Leader
    14. The SIG Leader is encouraged to have a SIG meeting at least once a month with a backup person appointed to conduct the meeting in place in case the SIG leader is unavailable for the planned meeting.

Approved by the PCC Executive committee 12/15/2001

Projector Policy

(Approved by PC Community's Executive Committee on August 24, 2002)

    1. The primary uses for the projector are PCC Main Meetings and SIG Meetings.
    2. The projector is covered for theft and fire by our insurance policy.
    3. All people who use the projector must be PC Community members.
    4. A Projector Coordinator is needed to coordinate the activities of the projector, and to provide a home base for the projector. For purposes of these guidelines, PC shall mean Projector Coordinator.
    5. Some training will be required for new users of the projector. A training sheet should accompany the projector.
    6. Only a SIG Leader or authorized user (PCC member only) or officer should be allowed to transport the projector. The PC will not be required to pick up or deliver the projector. Instead, the users of the projector provide all transportation to or from the PC, or to each other.
    7. All precautions to prevent damage to, or theft of, the projector, shall be exercised. The PC should create a list of specific handling and care items that every user must obey and the list should reside with the projector.
    8. The projector must be retrievable by the PC at any time. The PC should exercise this privilege with reasonable concern for the welfare of the projector and the PC Community. Generally, the projector “resides” with the PC. It should not “reside” elsewhere for more than seven days, unless the PC approves.
    9. Use of the projector shall be scheduled at all times. The official schedule, whether by website calendar, phone calls, or email, shall be maintained by the PC. The official schedule shall take precedence over all other arrangements, and the PC shall oversee the schedule. Reliance on the calendar alone is insufficient. The PC will give the final authorization. Proper communication is vital. A telephone call is greatly preferred over an email, in order to provide the most timely communication.
    10. The PC shall be notified immediately whenever the projector changes hands or condition, and the PC shall be kept apprised of the condition and whereabouts of the projector at all times. Anyone who finds something wrong with the projector and/or peripherals must contact the PC immediately. No one should attempt to repair the projector, as this may void our three-year warranty. If moving directly between SIG leaders, the SIG Leader receiving the projector should generally be responsible for picking it up, as the receiving SIG Leader is more motivated to get the projector than the current user is motivated to deliver the projector. But this can be changed by mutual agreement of the SIG leaders.
    11. The PC shall be notified of any private arrangements. The PC need not give approval for private arrangements, but may disapprove of them if there is a conflict or other concern for projector welfare. Do not make private arrangements for projector transfers or usage without coordination with the PC. Unscheduled usage or transfer of the projector is completely unauthorized. The PC must be notified via email or phone, and the PC must give permission. Only if the PC is unavailable shall another PCC officer give this approval. All unexpected situations shall be referred immediately to the PC. Otherwise, nobody knows where the projector is, and this is unacceptable.
    12. No member should assume that they may use the projector on a particular day without the PC agreement. Someone else may have set up an appointment already. All requests to use the projector should be made as far in advance as possible, preferably the prior month.
    13. The person who is scheduled to use the projector will be responsible for picking it up. Whether they pick it up from the PC or from the previous user will generally be handled on a case-by-case basis. However, the PC should be involved in, and/or informed of, these decisions.
    14. Courtesy and good communications are critical to the effective use of the projector. Going out of one's way to be courteous and cooperative is required, in order to maintain the most efficient and effective use of the projector.
    15. Usage of the projector should be fair and not favor any person over another. The projector MUST be available for use at the monthly main meetings. The PC will be flexible, but is not to be exploited by members. Work with the PC, not against the PC. Do what is best for the club as a whole, not what is best for individuals.
    16. Prior to each Exec Meeting, a schedule for the projector will be prepared by the PC, and be reviewed by the Exec Committee. This is similar to approving the club calendar.
    17. If there are problems returning the projector, or making it available for the next scheduled person, and the problem could have been avoided, use of the projector by that person will be prohibited for one month or more.
    18. A condition check-off log will go with the projector.
    19. Projector setup instructions will accompany the projector.
    20. The PC is responsible for getting the projector to Main Meetings.
