Interesting Genealogy Links

Ancestry.Com

http://www.ancestry.com is a pay site  but there are some free services here like the CA birth and death indexes, Social Security death index and the WorldConnect project.

Bureau of land Management

California Pioneer project

This is the California Pioneer project. It has  information on the early settlers of California. Also see the FHL Wiki or search for "California Pioneer Project " in your favorite search engine.

Genealogy at About.com

http://genealogy.about.com is a great genealogy web site with a super Blog section

ROOTSWEB

Excellent Genealogy site offering free web sites http://www.rootsweb.com/

Ancestral Findings

Good Web Site  with lots of resources http://www.ancestralfindings.com/

Cyndi's list of Genealogy Links

This is quite an exhaustive genealogy site. It is a, "categorized & cross-referenced index to genealogical resources on the Internet" at http://www.cyndislist.com.  Cyndi claims to have over 105,000 links at this web site. Among other things is a a thorough tutorial on how to construct your own genealogy web pages at http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm. She has everything from Birth and Baptism, Cemeteries, Death Records and much, much more.

Hayward Area Genealogy Society

A very good group that meets on the 4th Tuesday at the San Lorenzo Public Library in San Lorenzo. Many of their members belong to PCC and vice versa. They have a collection of books and interesting topics and speakers every month. Try their web site at http://hagsociety.tripod.com.

The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society

A local (California Bay Area) good web site http://www.l-ags.org/lagslinks.htm. Their web site is a good jump-off site to see if you REALLY are interested in Genealogy.

50,000  common surnames

One link I found at Livermore-Amador  was the distribution of 50,000  common surnames in the U.S. per the latest census. Your name will work if it's one of the most common, 50,000. You type in your surname and it will return a map of the U.S. color coded with the frequency of your surname in that state. It's a starting point as to where your relatives may be (hiding out). It's at http://hamrick.com/names/

Ellis Island Web Site

The Ellis Island Web Site came on line recently at http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ but was overwhelmed with an alleged 22 million hits the first week.

Livermore Amador Genealogy Society

This is the web site of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society (L-AGS). This society serves the cities of Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin and surrounding areas in the Livermore and Amador Valleys of southeastern Alameda County, in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area of California. http://www.l-ags.org/

Records Room

Meeting Notes on Past Genealogy SIG Meetings

January 21, 2003 - We viewed a very good instructional video on how to use Family Tree Maker 10.0.

November 19th, 2002 - Karen did a nice job conducting the meeting. Joan Soo mentioned the Stump contest for HAGS. Send in the name of a relative that has you stumped and we'll give you some answers at the January 28th HAGS meeting.

Please consider the Hayward Area Genealogical Society if you just can't get enough good Genealogy information.

October 15, 2002 - Was held at Millie Cuellar's home in Hayward. We got her scanner going,  reviewed her Genealogy Book collection and answered many questions..

September 17th, 2002 - We had a well attended meeting at the Clubhouse and discussed individual Genealogy challenges and what we learned at the Family History Center in Oakland last month. We talked about future meetings that could focus on tools that are needed by genealogists like scanners, cameras, optical character recognition, portable storage devices. We also discussed tours to the Sutro Library and the National Archives in San Francisco.

August 20th, 2002 - We held an excellent Genealogy SIG at the Family History Center (at the Mormon Temple) in Oakland at 4770 Lincoln Ave., Oakland, CA  94602. The Family History Center is located in the basement of the Visitor's Center. This was our first Field Trip! We received a tour of the Center, a very good source of genealogy information. See their website at http://www.oaklandfhc.org.

July 16th, 2002- We had general discussions and talked about how to use the LDS search page at http://www.familysearch.org. An example genealogy web page was circulated, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~howiefamily/entry.htm

May 21st, 2002 - This month Jim Van Scyoc was the lucky Genealogy advice-receiver. For Civil War Battle information try the National Park Service web site at http://www.nps.gov. The Mormon Temple Family History Center in Oakland is now open. The California State Library can be a resource. It's located at http://www.library.ca.gov/. If you're looking for Military records Carl recommends the following:

  • Records before World War I
    Old Military and civil Records
    (NWCTP-Pension)
    Textual Archives Services Division
    National Archives and Records Administration
    700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
    Washington DC 20408-00001
  • Records for World War I and after
    National Personnel Records Center
    (Military Personnel Records)
    9700 Page Avenue
    St.Louis MO 63132-5100

April 16th, 2002 - We gave the once-over to the Genealogy of William George with suggestions on how to conduct his research...like suggesting he find the borough in New York where his grandparents were married so the marriage certificates could be requested; Find from living relatives where they, their children and their parents lived at various times in their lives. For relatives in the Military, obtain SSN, military entry/exit date and which branch of service. WWI and after military records are in St. Louis. Prior to WWI records are in Washington DC. Some other key local genealogical collections are:

The Hayward Genealogy Society meets on April 23rd at the San Lorenzo Library AT 6:30PM. the Livermore Amador Valley Genealogy Society meets in Pleasanton on the 2nd Tuesday in Livermore at 6:30pm.

February 19th, 2002 Meeting - We had a nice turnout plus prospective member, Georgia Combs attended. We discussed the book, "Royalty for Commoners" by Roderick W. Stuart, 4th ed., 2001, published by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St, Baltimore MD 21202, 1800-296-6687, Library of Congress number 2001 135382, Intl Std. Book # 0-8063-1687-X. This book traces many royalty lines and YOU may be related to royalty

We discussed how Portuguese people from Madera migrated to Hayward and from the Azores (Feyal) migrated to San Leandro. Another interesting fact was, that in 1832 in Portugal, a law was passed causing children to have to take their father's surname. Prior to that time children were free to take whatever surname was meaningful to them, making surname research very difficult.

(2) Everyone call Carl in January to make SURE he comes back (3) Origins of first and last names (4) Need to re-install FTM on one of the Club Computers (5) www.ancestry.com is a very good resource (6) U.S. Surname Distribution at http://www.pcc.org/resources/bill_byte.htm (7)How to e-mail a report from Family Tree Maker - No one knew how, to be discovered next month (8) Much much, more.
